The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has officially called on Muslims across the country to begin searching for the crescent moon that marks the commencement of Ramadan 2025 (1446 AH).

In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Council directed the Muslim community to start looking for the moon immediately after sunset on Friday, February 28, 2025, which corresponds to 29th Sha’aban 1446 AH.

If reliable witnesses confirm sighting the crescent that evening, the President-General of NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, will officially declare Saturday, March 1, as the first day of fasting. However, if the moon is not sighted, fasting will automatically begin on Sunday, March 2.

To ensure accuracy and coordination, the NSCIA has provided the contact details of key members of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), who are responsible for verifying and confirming credible moon sighting reports. Additionally, local Islamic leaders will actively participate in the process to maintain unity in the commencement of Ramadan across Nigeria.

Supporting the Less Privileged During Ramadan

Beyond the moon sighting, the NSCIA has made a strong appeal to wealthy and privileged Muslims to extend acts of charity and generosity, especially in light of the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

“In these challenging times, the Council urges endowed Muslims to assist the less privileged within their communities, not just during Ramadan but before and after the holy month as well,” the statement read.

The Council also issued a stern warning to traders against hoarding essential food items or inflating prices during the fasting period, emphasizing that Ramadan is a time for compassion, fairness, and communal support.

Muslims nationwide are encouraged to remain vigilant for moon sighting updates and await the official proclamation from the Sultan of Sokoto regarding the commencement of Ramadan 1446 AH.
