In the bright lights of Amsterdam, Victor Osimhen etched his name into football history with a performance that will be remembered for generations. The Nigerian forward scored a sensational hat-trick to inspire Galatasaray to a dominant 3–0 win over Ajax, becoming only the second Nigerian ever to achieve the feat in the UEFA Champions League.

For 58 minutes, the match was a tense chess game between two historic clubs. Then, Osimhen rose above everyone to turn the tide. The Super Eagles striker met a teasing cross with a precise header that found the bottom of the net past Remko Pasveer, breaking the deadlock and igniting Galatasaray’s European dream.

His second goal came just seven minutes later. After VAR confirmed a handball in the Ajax box, Osimhen stepped up to the spot with unshakeable confidence, sending Pasveer the wrong way and doubling the Turkish champions’ lead.

But the night belonged to him alone. In the 78th minute, lightning struck twice from the spot — another penalty, another calm finish. This time, after Gerald Alders was penalised, Osimhen sealed his hat-trick and Galatasaray’s victory in commanding fashion. The 26-year-old celebrated with emotion, surrounded by teammates and cheered on by the travelling fans who witnessed a new chapter in the club’s European story

Osimhen’s heroics marked Galatasaray’s first Champions League hat-trick since Burak Yilmaz’s treble against Cluj in 2012. For Nigeria, it was a moment of pride — the Napoli forward joined Yakubu Ayegbeni as the only Nigerians to ever record a Champions League hat-trick. Yakubu achieved his own landmark for Maccabi Haifa in a 3–0 victory over Olympiacos back in 2002.

This latest achievement adds to Osimhen’s growing European legacy. With 12 goals in his last eight appearances for Galatasaray, including braces against Tottenham and Bodø/Glimt and goals against AZ Alkmaar, Dynamo Kyiv, and Liverpool, his form has been nothing short of electric.

The milestone also elevated Osimhen as the highest-scoring Nigerian in UEFA Champions League history with 15 goals — surpassing Obafemi Martins’ previous record of 10. Wednesday’s match was his 50th for Galatasaray and his 20th in the Champions League, putting him just one appearance shy of equalling the Nigerian record held jointly by Victor Ikpeba and Céléstine Babayaro.

With 25 goals across all UEFA club competitions, Osimhen now stands as Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in European tournaments — a testament to his consistency, power, and hunger for the big stage.

For Galatasaray, Osimhen’s brilliance has been the heartbeat of their continental resurgence. His form could be the key to breaking their 12-year absence from the Champions League knockout rounds. For Nigeria, it’s a reminder that their number nine remains one of Africa’s finest footballing exports — a symbol of talent, determination, and excellence.
