The Nigerian sporting community was thrown into mourning earlier today following the death of legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, popularly known as Dodomayana. The news has stirred a wave of emotion and heartfelt tributes across all sectors of Nigerian sports, and one of the most touching came from Olumide Oyedeji, former D’Tigers captain and president of Hoops N’ Read Basketball Club.

Oyedeji, who has remained a unifying figure in Nigerian sports even after his retirement from professional basketball, shared his message of condolence on the Family United by Sports WhatsApp platform, a group that connects athletes and stakeholders across various disciplines.

In his tribute, Oyedeji referred to Rufai not just as a football legend but as “a friend, a brother, and a hero” whose contribution to Nigerian football history can never be forgotten.

“The loss of a friend, a brother, and a hero is a profound experience that brings immense sadness,” Oyedeji wrote. “His remarkable achievement of winning the Africa Nations Cup and participating in USA 94 World Cup will be forever etched in our hearts.”

He went on to highlight how Peter Rufai’s legacy transcends sports trophies and on-field accolades.

“The impact he made on others will continue to inspire and motivate generations to come. His legacy will endure, serving as a reminder of his extraordinary talent and unwavering dedication. Though he is gone, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and admired him.”

Rufai’s football journey remains one of the most iconic in Nigeria’s history. With a career spanning over a decade at the top level, including international appearances at the FIFA World Cup and lifting the AFCON trophy in 1994, Rufai earned his place as one of the greatest goalkeepers to ever wear the green and white jersey.

Known for his commanding presence, leadership, and charisma on and off the pitch, Peter Rufai was a beacon of hope and resilience during the golden generation of Nigerian football. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

As the country mourns the passing of a true icon, it is clear that Peter Rufai’s legacy will live on in stories told, memories shared, and the continued passion he inspired in Nigeria’s next generation of athletes.

“Rest in peace, Dodomayana. Good night, Big Broda.”
