Ekiti United Football Club are beginning to look like a team with serious intentions in the 2025–2026 Nigeria National League season. After six matchdays, the Ado Ekiti-based side sit proudly at the top of the NNL Southern Conference Group B with 12 points, a position earned through consistency, tactical discipline and a growing belief within the camp.

Their latest statement of intent came on Sunday at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, where Ekiti United defeated Godswill Akpabio United FC 2 to 1 under sunny conditions on the artificial turf. It was a result that underlined their maturity and ability to manage games, even when pressure arrived late.

A Fast Start Sets the Tone

Ekiti United wasted no time in asserting control. Barely five minutes into the encounter, Ajengele Segun announced his presence with a well-taken opener that sent the home fans into celebration. The early goal settled nerves and allowed the hosts to dictate the tempo, moving the ball confidently and pressing with intent.

The advantage was doubled in the 36th minute when Ayodeji Lawal found the back of the net, rewarding Ekiti United for sustained pressure and intelligent movement in the final third. By halftime, the hosts held a comfortable two-goal cushion and looked firmly in control.

Managing the Game Like Leaders

The second half demanded composure rather than flair. Godswill Akpabio United attempted to claw their way back into the contest with multiple substitutions just after the hour mark, but Ekiti United responded with timely changes of their own to maintain structure and energy across the pitch.

Ajengele Segun, Foalade Opeyemi, Akeem Amuda and goalkeeper Kelvin Ikenna were among those introduced or adjusted as the technical crew focused on game management rather than chasing more goals.

Despite Ekiti United’s control, the visitors pulled one back late on through Oloke Seun in the 87th minute, a moment that briefly raised tension inside the stadium. However, the home side held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points.

Discipline and Focus Proving Decisive

The match was officiated by Ese Williams with support from experienced assistants and assessors, and while Godswill Akpabio United picked up two cautions for unsporting behaviour, Ekiti United stayed disciplined and composed throughout the contest.

That discipline has become a defining trait of their campaign so far. With Abakaliki FC on 11 points and Sporting Lagos FC close behind on 10, the margins at the top remain tight, but Ekiti United have shown the ability to grind out results without losing their identity.

Early Days but Promising Signs

With only six matches played in an 18-match season, there is a clear understanding within the Ekiti United camp that it is far too early for celebrations. Yet, there is quiet confidence in their approach of taking each game as it comes, a mindset that has served them well so far.

The NNL will head into a short break after the next round of fixtures, but before that pause comes a defining test.

Lagos Clash Could Shape the Narrative

Ekiti United now travel to Lagos to face Sporting Lagos FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in what is widely viewed as a top-of-the-table showdown. The outcome of that encounter will determine who finishes the year as leaders of the Southern Conference Group B and could set the psychological tone for the rest of the campaign.

For Ekiti United, it is another opportunity to show that their place at the summit is no accident, but the result of planning, patience and a collective belief that this season could be something special.
