Calvin Bassey has officially cemented his place in Fulham history after being voted the 2024/25 Player of the Season, receiving a commanding 39.6 percent of the fan vote—the highest share in this year’s poll. The Nigerian international centre-back edged out fellow compatriot Alex Iwobi (21.5%) and Antonee Robinson (19.9%), with goalkeeper Bernd Leno rounding out the top four at 10.9%.

This isn’t just an individual accolade—it’s a historic milestone. Bassey becomes the first Nigerian and the first African to win the award since its inception, a feat that resonates far beyond Craven Cottage.

A Season Defined by Consistency and Power

Bassey, 25, has been Fulham’s rock at the back throughout the season. Featuring in 35 Premier League matches, his calmness under pressure, solid positioning, and sheer physicality helped Fulham to a respectable 11th-place finish in the league.

His stats speak volumes:

  • 0.6 interceptions per game
  • 1.5 tackles per game
  • 4.8 ball recoveries per game
  • 3.2 clearances per game
  • 5 clean sheets
  • 2 goals

The goals weren’t just numbers—they were moments of impact. One came in a vital league clash against Nottingham Forest, the other during Fulham’s FA Cup journey against Manchester United.

From Ajax to London’s Defensive Wall

After joining Fulham from Ajax in July 2023, Bassey adapted quickly to the demands of English football. He became a linchpin in Marco Silva’s defense—rarely dropping his level and always leading with intensity.

His development hasn’t gone unnoticed. Match of the Day 2 pundit and former international goalkeeper Shay Given praised Bassey’s performance in the thrilling 3–2 victory over Liverpool, likening his growth trajectory to that of top-level defenders like Virgil van Dijk.
