One of the most refreshing stories from the 2024 National Sports Festival – Gateway Games in Abeokuta is not about a gold medal or a record-breaking finish. It’s about a quiet spark lighting the path to greatness. That spark is Hephzibah Okon, a young and determined sprinter from Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, who is steadily carving out her place in Nigerian athletics.

Still in her teens, Hephzibah was selected to represent the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) team, a special initiative created to offer young talents the experience of competing on a national stage. While she didn’t make it past her 400m heat, her presence at the Gateway Games is proof that she’s already running with the best—and learning from every stride.

From MTN Champs to National Spotlight

Hephzibah’s name first emerged in the public athletics conversation during the inaugural MTN Champs in Uyo (2023). She caught the attention of coaches, scouts, and fans with her raw speed and composure. That performance laid the groundwork for her invitation to this year’s National Sports Festival.

Her participation in the 400m at Abeokuta may not have ended in a podium finish, but it marked an important milestone in her athletic development. Competing against more experienced runners in a packed field offered her a taste of the top level—and lit a fire for what’s next.

A Star in the Making

Many great athletes began just like this: not with headlines, but with heart. For Hephzibah Okon, this is just the beginning. Every young athlete needs that first moment—on the track, under the lights, in front of a crowd. She’s had hers, and Nigeria should take note.
