The victory was extra special as they overcame Unification FC Ladies, the fearless underdogs who shocked the tournament by eliminating 14-time reigning champions, FC Robo, in the semifinals.
For the first time in 14 years, Lagos has a new queen of women’s football, and Dannaz Ladies had to dig deep to earn it.
A Hard-Fought Battle on the Pitch
Despite being the more experienced NWFL side and a four-time finalist, Dannaz Ladies knew Unification FC wasn’t going to be an easy opponent. The “Giant Killers” came determined to complete their fairytale run and nearly did—until a moment of individual brilliance changed the game.
In the 62nd minute, Raji Zainab weaved her way into the penalty area, forcing Unification’s Esther into a desperate handball. The referee pointed to the spot, and Ogunfunwa Toke held her nerve to bury the penalty into the back of the net.
Despite Unification Ladies’ relentless attempts to equalise, Dannaz Ladies’ defence stood firm, holding on to their historic victory.
